PACE partners visit Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone Detention Centre to explore prison healthcare in practice

As part of the PACE General Assembly meeting in Montpellier, project partners visited Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone Detention Centre, gaining valuable insights into the delivery of healthcare in a prison setting.
One of the highlights of the visit was the prison healthcare unit, which is integrated with CHU de Montpellier. PACE partners were welcomed by Dr Fadi Meroueh, whose longstanding commitment to prison health is widely recognised, together with his multidisciplinary team, whose work has helped shape a model centred on continuity of care, dignity and equitable access to healthcare.
Beyond the hospital facilities themselves, what stood out most was the dedication and human-centred approach of the healthcare professionals: physicians, nurses, pharmacists and the wider clinical team, who provide care with professionalism, compassion and respect every day.
Seeing healthcare delivered in practice reinforces PACE's commitment to supporting equitable access to prevention, early detection, and care for cancers caused by infections for people living in prison.
